According to the notice of husky terminal at Tacoma port, from November 1, an extended detention fee of US $315 will be charged for each container stranded on the terminal for more than 15 days or more, so as to improve the container operation speed of the terminal.
At the same time, Washington United port at Tacoma port also announced on November 1 that a long-term detention fee of US $310 will be levied on imported containers stranded on the terminal for more than 15 days from November 15.
Some experts said that imposing a fine on detained goods was the "last resort".
Earlier, the U.S. ports of Los Angeles and long beach announced that they would charge surcharges to shipping companies in order to improve the operation efficiency of U.S. ports and improve congestion.
According to the new policy, the two ports will charge a surcharge of US $100 / container for overdue container transportation by truck and railway, and increase US $100 per day.

It can be seen that the measures introduced by Tacoma port are still somewhat different from that of Los Angeles port: these measures are formulated by private terminal operators, not port authorities. And it is a one-time cost and will not increase over time.
Although the cargo volume is lower than before the epidemic, Tacoma port and Seattle port still face congestion this year.
The two ports handled 360517 TEU in September, a decrease of 5% over 2019. In the first nine months of this year, the standard containers handled by the port decreased by 106261 TEU compared with two years ago.
At present, 15 ships are anchored in jeept Bay, and another 3 are waiting for berths at sea. Due to the shortage of empty containers and chassis in the region and the overload of warehouses, importers face challenges in retrieving containers.
