The problem of port congestion has gradually become the focus of the shipping industry. As the shipping season approaches, more and more cargo and container ships appear in and around the port.

Recently, according to foreign media reports, Chittagong in Bangladesh has been blocked and exploded again. Now it is almost impossible to unload LCL cargo at this port. Due to the delay of the importers in picking up their containers, their container yards are now full of goods.

According to a recent statement issued by Chittagong port authority, about 1573 TEU LCL containers have been waiting at the port for several days, while another 1000 TEU are waiting at the outer anchorage.

The Port Authority said that in order to keep the operation activities of the port unimpeded and normal, LCL cargo needs to be delivered quickly.

At present, the cargo transportation speed of container freight stations is slow, which seriously disrupts the daily activities of the main ports in Bangladesh. It is understood that the port handles 92% of the seaborne trade.

The port has designated a storage capacity of 1000 TEU in its yard for LCL containers, but it seems that importers prefer to use the port yard as a "warehouse" rather than receiving goods. CFS yard often exceeds the capacity.

A Chittagong port official said: "importers are eager to receive 10% of the newly landed LCL boxes and leave the remaining 90% at the CFS station for several months." He said that because the port tariff is very low, importers prefer to leave boxes and goods in the port yard.

Another official said that a few months ago, the port authority threatened to impose a four fold fine on overdue boxes and goods, but this did not bring much change.

He added that since the Eid al Fitr holiday this month, the number of containers in the port yard has remained at 40000 TEU, while the total storage capacity is 49018 TEU.

According to the port data, about 42153 TEU were packed in the port yard yesterday. At the same time, 19 container ships are waiting at the anchorage outside the port, and another 12 container ships are loading and unloading containers.

Shahidullah azim, vice president of Bangladesh garment manufacturers and Exporters Association (bgmea), said that the association also sent a letter to its members urging them to receive LCL containers as soon as possible.

However, he said that lengthy customs procedures had also caused delays.

Recently, in order to prevent monkeypox from spreading in Bangladesh by sea, Chittagong announced that all ships arriving at the port should take preventive measures.

According to the General Administration of customs, shore passes shall not be issued to any officer / crew unless in an emergency and with the prior approval of the port health officer (PHO).
