At the end of December 2021, facing the risk of empty container accumulation, retailers began to worry that LA / lb port authority would charge for these empty containers. However, this fear has become a reality.
The port of Los Angeles took the lead in announcing on its official website that it would charge shipping companies for overdue detention of empty containers from January 30, 2022.
The charging plan is approved by the Los Angeles port authority and charges for empty containers stranded in the port for 9 days or more.
Obviously, this charge is similar to the charge for imported containers stranded in the port mentioned earlier. Moreover, this charging plan will charge us $100 / container for empty containers stranded for more than 9 days, and will increase US $100 every day, and so on.
Although Long Beach port has not made any statement on the problem of empty container stacking so far, the person in charge of Long Beach port said that it may follow the practice of Los Angeles port.
Los Angeles CEO Seroka said that the previously launched charging policy for imported containers stacked at the port has achieved good results. Now empty containers are slowly increasing, so we will reduce the number of empty containers in the same way.
It added that, like the previous purpose, we did this not to obtain benefits, but to alleviate the pressure of port congestion, release more port space and enable the supply chain to proceed smoothly.
A container truck company said it needed to send more sweeper ships to clean up these empty containers. Due to the accumulation of a large number of empty containers, truck companies have to put these containers on the truck chassis. However, this will further restrict their transportation of goods.
